All accredited psychological therapists have a supervision requirement in
their code of ethics. Supervision is recognised as both invaluable and
essential, however experienced the therapist. Mentoring is now a requirement
for all AAMET registered practitioners.
Supervision or mentoring is important to a practising therapist in a number of
different ways. It allows the therapist access to a more experienced
practitioner who can offer support with cases, identify skill gaps and give
guidance regarding additional training. Support can also be given with
management and administration issues in the therapists practice. Most
importantly, mentoring can offer a safe and comfortable place for the therapist
to explore issues that may be coming up for them in their therapeutic work
(known as countertransference). Recognising when clients “push our buttons”
helps us to keep our stuff out of the therapy room, not as easy as it might
sound! Supervision and mentoring are carried out in an atmosphere of mutual
respect and empathy.
